      三、阅读理解

      A

For some people, music is no fun at all. About four percent of the population is what scientists call “amusic”. People who are amusic are born without the ability to recognize or reproduce musical notes. Amusic people often cannot tell the difference between two songs. Amusics can only hear the difference between two notes if they are very far apart on the musical scale.

As a result, songs sound like noise to an amusic. Many amusics compare the sound of music to pieces of metal hitting each other. Life can be hard for amusics. Their inability to enjoy music set them apart from others. It can be difficult for other people to identify with their condition. In fact, most people cannot begin to grasp what it feels like to be amusic. Just going to a restaurant or a shopping mall can be uncomfortable or even painful. That is why many amusics intentionally stay away from places where there is music. However, this can result in withdrawal and social isolation. “I used to hate parties,” says Margaret, a seventy-year-old woman who only recently discovered that she was amusic. By studying people like Margaret, scientists are finally learning how to identify this unusual condition.

Scientists say that the brains of amusics are different from the brains of people who can appreciate music. The difference is complex, and it doesn’t involve defective hearing. Amusics can understand other nonmusical sounds well. They also have no problems understanding ordinary speech. Scientists compare amusics to people who just can’t see certain colors.

Many amusics are happy when their condition is finally diagnosed. For years, Margaret felt embarrassed about her problem with music. Now she knows that she is not alone. There is a name for her condition. That makes it easier for her to explain. “When people invite me to a concert, I just say, ‘No thanks, I’m amusic,’” says Margaret. “I just wish I had learned to say that when I was seventeen and not seventy.”

      31. Which of the following is true of amusics?

      A. Listening to music is far from enjoyable for them.

      B. They love places where they are likely to hear music.

      C. They can easily tell two different songs apart.

      D. Their situation is well understood by musicians.

      32. According to paragraph 3, a person with “defective hearing” is probably one who __________.

      A. dislikes listening to speeches B. can hear anything nonmusical

      C. has a hearing problem D. lacks a complex hearing system

      33. In the last paragraph, Margaret expressed her wish that __________.

      A. her problem with music had been diagnosed earlier

      B. she was seventeen years old rather than seventy

      C. her problem could be easily explained

      D. she was able to meet other amusics

      34. What is the passage mainly concerned with?

      A. Amusics’ strange behaviours.

      B. Some people’s inability to enjoy music.

      C. Musical talent and brain structure.

      D. Identification and treatment of amusics.

      B

Below is a selection from a popular science book.

If blood is red, why are veins blue?

Actually, veins are not blue at all. They are more of a clear, yellowish color. Although blood looks red when it’s outside the body, when it’s sitting in the vein near the surface of the skin, it’s more of a dark reddish-purple color. At the right depth, these blood-filled veins reflect less red light than the surrounding skin, making them look blue by comparison.

Which works harder, you heart or your brain?

That kind of depends on whether you’re busy thinking or busy exercising. Your heart works up to three times harder during exercise, and shifts enough blood over a lifetime to fill a supertanker. But in the long run, your brain probably tips it, because even when you’re sitting still your brain is using twice as much energy as your heart, and it takes four to five times as much blood to feed it.

Why do teeth fall out, and why don’t they grow back in grown-ups?

Baby (or “milk”) teeth do not last long; they fall out to make bigger room for bigger, stronger adult teeth later on. Adult teeth fall our when they become damaged, decayed and infected by bacteria. Once this second set of teeth has grown in, you’re done. When they’re gone, they are gone. This is because nature figures you’re set for life, and what controls regrowth of your teeth switches off.

Do old people shrink as they age?

Yes and no. Many people do get shorter as they age. But, when they do, it isn’t because they’re shrinking all over. They lose height as their spine becomes shorter and more curved due to disuse and the effect of gravity. Many (but not all) men and women do lose height as they get older. Men lose and average of 3-4 cm in height as they age, while women may lose 5 cm or more. If you live to be 200 years old, would you keep shrinking till you were, like 60 cm tall, like a little boy again? No, because old people don’t really shrink! It is not that they are growing backwards — their legs, arms and backbones getting shorter. When they do get shorter, it’s because the spine has shortened a little. Or, more often, become more bent and curved.

Why does spinning make you dizzy?

Because your brain gets confused between what you’re seeing and what you’re feeling. The brain senses that you’re spinning using special gravity-and-motion-sensing organs in your inner ear, which work together with your eyes to keep your vision balance stable. But when you suddenly stop spinning the system goes out of control, and your brain thinks you’re moving while you’re not.

Where do feelings and emotions come from?

Mostly from an ancient part of the brain called the limbic system. All mammals have this brain area — from mice to dogs, cats, and humans. So all mammals feel basic emotions like fear, pain and pleasure. But since human feelings also involve other, newer bits of the brain, we feel more complex emotions than any other animal on this planet.

If exercise wears you out, how can it be good for you?

Because our bodies adapt to everything we do to them. And as far as your body is concerned, it’s “use it, or lose it”! It’s not that exercise makes you healthy, it’s more that a lack of exercise leaves your body weak and easily affected by disease.

      35. What is the color of blood in a vein near the surface of the skin?

      A. Blue B. Light yellow

      C. Red D. Dark reddish purple

      36. Why do some old people look a little shrunken as they age?

      A. Because their spine is in active use.

      B. Because they are more easily affected by gravity.

      C. Because they keep growing backwards.

      D. Because their spine becomes more bent.

      37. Which of the following statements about our brain is true?

      A. In the long run, our brain probably works harder than our heart.

      B. When our brain senses the spinning, we will feel dizzy.

      C. The brains of the other mammals are as complex as those of humans.

      D. Our feelings and emotions come from the most developed area in our brain.

      38. What is the main purpose of the selection?

      A. To give advice on how to stay healthy.

      B. To provide information about our body.

      C. To challenge new findings in medical research.

      D. To report the latest discoveries in medical science.

      C

It was Mother’s Day morning last year and I was doing my shopping at our local supermarket with my five-year-old son, Tenyson. As we were leaving, we found that only minutes earlier an elderly woman had fallen over at the entrance and had hit her head on the concrete. Her husband was with her, but there was blood everywhere and the woman was embarrassed and clearly in shock.

Walking towards the scene, Tenyson became very upset about what had happened to the couple. He said to me, “Mum, it’s not much fun falling over in front of everyone.”

At the front of the supermarket a charity(慈善) group had set up a stand selling cooked sausages and flowers to raise funds. Tenyson suggested that we should buy the lady a flower. “It will make her feel better, ” he said. I was amazed that he’d come up with such a sweet idea. So we went over to the flower seller and asked her if we could buy a flower for the lady to cheer her up. “Just take it,” she replied. “I can’t take your money for such a wonderful gesture.”

By now paramedics(救援人员)had arrived, and were attending the injured woman. As we walked up to her, my son became intimidated by all the blood and medical equipment. He said he was just too scared to go up to her. Instead I gave the flower to the woman’s husband and told him, “My son was very upset for your wife and wanted to give her this flower to make her feel better.”

At that, the old man started crying and said, “Thank you so much, you have a wonderful son. Happy Mother's Day to you.”

The man then bent down and gave his wife the flower, telling her who it was from. Though badly hurt and shaken, the old lady looked up at Tenyson with love in her eyes and gave him a little smile.

      39. What does the author intend to tell us?

      A. One can never be too careful.

      B. Actions speak louder than words.

      C. Love begins with a little smile.

      D. A small act of kindness brings a great joy.

      40. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

      A. The elderly woman was knocked down by Tenyson.

      B. Tenyson’s idea of buying a flower gained his mother’s support.

      C. Tenyson’s care for the elderly woman puzzled the flower seller.

      D. The elderly woman was moved to tears by Tenyson’s gesture.

      41. The underlined word “intimidated” in the fourth paragraph probably means “___________”.

      A. astonished B. struck C. frightened D. excited

      D

In my living room, there is a plaque that advises me to “Bloom(开花) where you are planted.” It reminds me of Dorothy. I got to know Dorothy in the early 1980s, when I was teaching Early Childhood Development through a program with Union College in Barbourville, Kentucky. The job responsibilities required occasional visits to the classroom of each teacher in the program. Dorothy stands out in my memory as one who “bloomed” in her remote area.

Dorothy taught in a school in Harlan County, Kentucky, Appalachian Mountain area. To get to her school from the town of Harlan, I followed a road winding around the mountain. In the eight-mile journey, I crossed the same railroad track five times, giving the possibility of getting caught by the same train five times. Rather than feeling excited by this drive through the mountains, I found it depressing. The poverty level was shocking and the small shabby houses gave me the greatest feeling of hopelessness.

From the moment of my arrival at the little school, all gloom(忧郁) disappeared. Upon arriving at Dorothy’s classroom, I was greeted with smiling faces and treated like a queen. The children had been prepared to show me their latest projects. Dorothy told me with a big smile that they were serving poke greens salad and cornbread for “dinner” (lunch). In case you don’t know, poke greens are a weed-type plant that grows wild, especially on poor ground.

Dorothy never ran out of reports of exciting activities of her students. Her enthusiasm never cooled down. When it came time to sit for the testing and interviewing required to receive her Child Development Associate Certification, Dorothy was ready. She came to the assessment and passed in all areas. Afterward, she invited me to the one-and-only steak house in the area to celebrate her victory, as if she had received her Ph.D. degree. After the meal, she placed a little box containing an old pen in my hand. She said it was a family heirloom, but to me it is a treasured symbol of appreciation and pride that cannot be matched with things.

      42. “Early Childhood Development” in Paragraph I refers to ________.

      A. a course given by the author

      B. an organization sponsored by Union College

      C. a program directed by Dorothy

      D. an activity held by the students

      43. Upon arriving at the classroom, the author was cheered up by ________.

      A. the sight of poke greens B. a warm welcome

      C. Dorothy’s latest projects D. a big dinner made for her

      44. What can we know about Dorothy from the last paragraph?

      A. She was invited to a celebration at a restaurant.

      B. She got a pen as a gift from the author.

      C. She passed the required assessment.

      D. She received her Ph. D. degree.

      45. What does the author mainly intend to tell us?

      A. Whatever you do, you must do it carefully.

      B. Whoever you are, you deserve equal treatment

      C. However poor you are, you have the right to education.

      D. Wherever you are, you can accomplish your achievement.
